FRANCIS CHONG 张润良
b. Negeri Sembilan, 1974
Having a keen interest in drawing, Francis Chong aspires to become an artist since childhood. Although his parents were unable to afford painting lessons due to poverty, this did not put off his passionate dream.
During high school, he met the late Mr Lum Weng Kong, a renowned Malaysian Chinese ink painter and calligrapher, who then recommended him to teach young students painting at the Songlin Painting Studio founded by Mr Lum. Chong gradually assimilated the techniques of painting through the process, driving him to become a self-taught artist after graduation.
With a pure heart and strong determination, he managed to hold his first solo exhibition at the City Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur in 2009. After that, he actively participated in numerous group exhibitions. In 2017, Chong’s second solo exhibition was organised by the Fo Guang Shan Dong Zen Temple and was a huge success.
In 2018, Chong took part in the 1st Malaysia International Watercolour Biennale and received the “Excellent Award” in the National Category. He also participated in the 1st International Watercolour Festival of IWS Czech Republic during the same year. In 2020, Chong won first prize in the Contemporary Painting and Art Competition.
Chong’s drawing style is realistic at first glance, featuring subjects from the real world, such as figurative, landscapes, birds and other animals. However, one must not overlook the most important theme of his artworks, that is, to deliver his inner spirit of love and care for humanity.
