HIBISCUS (2019) by Gian Ooi Wah
Gian Ooi Wah was born in Kuala Lumpur in 1947. In 1978, she was taught by three prominent contemporary Chinese ink artists in Malaysia, namely Professor Chung Chen Sun, Chong Chen Chuan and Chong Buck Tee. Gian successfully held her first solo exhibition in Chinwoo Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur in 1985. In the same year, the Association of Artists, Klang held her second solo exhibition titled “Gian Ooi Wah Art Exhibition”.
After two years, to help raise funds for the Chong Hwa education institution in Kuala Lumpur, she organised her third solo exhibition for charity purposes. In 2002, the Kuen Cheng Alumni Association, established from her former high school, held Gian’s 4th solo exhibition. Apart from solo exhibitions, Gian also participated in countless group exhibitions.
An experienced artist, Gian has also taught painting for over 20 years. In 1986, she began teaching middle and elementary students Western art as well as adult classes on Chinese ink painting. In 2014, she holds the position as KL Jing-Si Hall’s Chinese ink painting adult class tutor where she continues teaching until today.
