YAP HONG NGEE 叶逢仪
Yap Hong Ngee was born in Pahang in 1943. Inspired by his teacher, he began to learn drawing during secondary school. In 1959, he successfully won the grand prize in the National Youth Art Competition held within the country.
In 1966, Yap headed to Tokyo, Japan and studied there for 8 years. At the Tokyo University of the Arts, he was taught Japanese arts by established artists such as Seihyo Tanaka and Hirayama Ikuo. After that, he went to Waseda University where he majored in Japanese Art History. During his time in Japan, Yap has held numerous solo exhibitions across 10 regions, including Tokyo and Nagoya.
Yap has been dedicated to promoting art education since returning to Malaysia by setting up art learning centres. He continued to organise more than 60 solo exhibitions in various places, including Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Taipei and Bangkok. In 1994, Yap refined his floral and birds painting skills at the Beijing Central Academy of Fine Arts, China.
As the President of the Malaysian Shui-Mo Art Society and member of the International Contemporary Ink Painting Association, Yap’s artworks are collected by the National Visual Arts Gallery, Waseda University as well as local and overseas collectors.
