STILL LIFE: GRACIOUS ABUNDANCE, 2017 静物:感恩惜福 | CHIA HOY SAI 谢惠载
Chia Hoy Sai received his formal training at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore (1968-1969). After returning to Malaysia, he spent fifteen years working in publishing as a book illustrator before devoting himself fully to painting. He later became a full-time artist, working primarily in oil, pastel and charcoal, while mentoring younger artists including Lui Cheng Thak.
From 2000 onwards, Chia's practice was shaped by extensive travels across Southeast Asia. Solo journeys through remote regions of Sarawak, Laos, Cambodia, the Philippines and Myanmar inspired a body of work depicting rural life, indigenous communities in traditional attire, and the vibrant abundance of tropical fruits. In 2009, he collaborated with Soka Gakkai Malaysia on the touring exhibition "The Differing Faces of Southeast Asia", which travelled to fourteen locations across Malaysia. His solo shows were held at Wisma Saberkas, Sarawak (2002), Philippine Chinese Education Research Center (2006), Galeri Shah Alam, Selangor (2011), and PINKGUY Gallery, Kuala Lumpur (2022 & 2026).
