FATIMAH CHIK

b. Johor, 1947 - d. Selangor, 2023

艺术简历

Fatimah Chik was highly regarded as one of the most important women artists in Malaysia, specialising in the creation of intricately designed batik – a Malaysian traditional craft produced from waxing and dyeing of fabric, an area in which she established an unshakable status in the local art industry.

Fatimah Chik earned her Bachelor of Design in Textile from MARA Institute of Technology (now UiTM) in 1971, where she specialized in textile and fashion design and was among the first batch of students at the institute’s inaugural applied arts program. During the 1970s, there was a growing movement to reconnect with cultural heritage through traditional art forms like batik, arising from the National Cultural Congress (1971) and the Seminar on the Roots of Indigenous Art at ITM (1979). The environment would later induce burgeoning artists including Fatimah Chik, Syed Ahmad Jamal, and Nik Zainal Abidin to integrate tribal and Islamic motifs into their work.

Upon graduation, she worked at a batik research centre and later under fashion designer Tengku Zubaidah, which deepened her understanding of batik techniques and processes. She later married her former art history professor cum renowned artist and art critic, Redza Piyadasa, accompanying him to Honolulu, Hawaii during 1975 - 1977. There, she rediscovered the beauty of Southeast Asian traditional motifs. Her artistic vision was further enriched by visits to Indonesian batik centres, as well as research on Malay, Dayak, Batak, Sumba, Minangkabau and Toradja symbols. Upon returning to Malaysia, she began to incorporate the diverse indigenous aesthetics into her batik works using traditional blocks, including her signature triangular motif, derived from the gunungan (Mountain) symbol of the Nusantara region. This approach transformed her batiks into culturally rich, abstract paintings, elevating batik from craft to fine art.

As a dedicated and committed art educator, Fatimah Chik taught batik art at MARA Institute of Technology, Malaysian Institute of Art, as well as Kuala Lumpur Craft Complex which is operated by the Malaysian Handicraft Development Corporation (Kraftangan Malaysia). Her solos were held at the Singapore High Commission, Kuala Lumpur (1989); Tokyo, Japan (1993); and Putrajaya International Convention Centre (2016), while she also exhibited across the ASEAN region, Japan, Germany, USA, the UK, and Australia.

In her distinguished career, Fatimah Chik achieved notable recognition, including the 1st Prize in the National Sejadah Design (Senireka Sejadah Kebangsaan) competition organized by the National Art Gallery Malaysia (2002). In addition, she represented Malaysia at the 3rd Asia-Pacific Triennial in Brisbane, Australia, in 1999. Earlier, in 1996, she received the Juror’s Choice award in the Malaysian-level competition of the Philip Morris Asean Art Awards, and in 1985, she earned the 2nd Prize in the batik category at the Permodalan Nasional art competition. She was a long-time judge of the Piala Seri Endon batik design competitions and advisor of the Malaysia Batik Crafted for the World initiative.

Her works are widely sought after both locally and internationally, with collectors including the National Art Gallery Malaysia; National Gallery of Singapore; Ilham Foundation; Galeri Khazanah; Bank Negara Malaysia; Kampo Harada Art Museum, Tokyo; Philip Morris Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur; Mitsubishi, Tokyo; and Tokyo Gas, Tokyo.
