Koh Teng Huat

In an age saturated with images, overwhelmed by algorithms, and spiraling towards vanity—what remains of art’s soul?
For Malaysian artist Koh Teng Huat, the answer lies in the stroke of a palette knife, the shimmer of light and shadow, and a single tear—one no machine can fabricate.
This exhibition traces Koh’s decades-long journey, marked not by meticulous brushwork but by the sculptural gestures of the palette knife. Each scrape bears the weight of tension: between human and nature, memory and modernity, silence and resistance. These are not pictures. They are sites of catharsis.
The theme draws from Koh’s recent role in the award-winning local film 'You Are My Son'—a reserved, emotionally complex father. The exhibition seeks to reframe Koh's paintings with a cinematic lens.
Each work responds to a famous film scene, mood, or character—a cross-medium dialogue between canvas and cinema, creating a constellation of “movie stories” drawn from the emotional resonances already present in his canvases.
If painting risks being eclipsed by generative images, Koh’s work asks:
When feelings can be faked—how do we recognise what is real?
This is not merely an exhibition.
It is a reckoning.
A gaze fixed on what it means to create in Malaysia—right here, right now.
A quiet but urgent demand:
Does art still matter?
Do we still need what is real?
Let's find out together.
