来自砂拉越古晋的郭才标是本土传统水墨画基础深厚中的佼佼者。小学时期得到中国美术专科学校毕业的郑奕煌校长启蒙,中学阶段师从砂拉越先驱画家蔡洪钟。之后负笈台湾,于台湾师范大学修学纯美艺术系。他先后随黄君璧、溥心畬学习山水画,师从林玉山修习花鸟画;在西画方面,则受廖继春指导油画,并跟随马白水研习水彩画。于是在他的作品中,传承了这些大家的艺术思想与风范,拥有着深沉的传统绘画基础与格式。1963年毕业回国后便从事艺术绘画钻研与发扬的工作,于多所中学教导美术。1991年退休后,郭才标设立画室,坚持不懈地培养绘画人才。1994年成立“古晋中华书画研究会”,身兼创会会长。2008年荣获砂州政府颁发“砂拉越第一代艺术家”荣誉。首次个人画展于1974年在古晋假日酒店举行,之后亦多次为慈善、教育团体筹款而举行个展以及师生书画作品展。2015年,于吉隆坡颜丽轩画廊举办个人水墨画展《回归传统》。
Kueh Chai Phiaw, from Kuching, Sarawak, was a Chinese ink painter recognised for his grounding in traditional literati painting. During his early years, Kueh was tutored by Tay Ek Huang (a graduate of art academy in China) and art pioneer Tsai Horng Chung. He later pursued fine art at National Taiwan Normal University, where he was taught by leading artists including Huang Junbi, Lin Yushan, Pu Xinyu, Liao Jichun and Ma Baishui. Following his graduation in 1963, Kueh returned to Malaysia and taught art at several high schools until retiring in 1991, committed to art education and painting full-time. In 1994, he co-founded the Kuching Chinese Calligraphy and Painting Research Association, serving as its inaugural president. He was awarded the title of “First-Generation Artist of Sarawak” by the state government in 2008. His first solo exhibition was held at Holiday Inn, Kuching (1974), and in 2015, he presented the exhibition ‘Back to Traditional‘ at Younie Gallery, Kuala Lumpur.
