The application and expression of line and colour represent the greatest challenge explored in this exhibition. The pursuit of pure art is the lifelong aspiration and ultimate ideal of every artist. To return to simplicity and authenticity is to seek a beauty that is unadorned, sincere, and rooted in the very essence of artistic creation.
After decades of personal and artistic development, does an artist still possess the ability to return from complexity to a more innocent and sincere form of artistic expression? Has the artist reached a state of spiritual refinement and inner elevation, where life experience and artistic essence become fully integrated?
This exhibition presents the artistic and spiritual essence of six participating artists, each employing different mediums to reveal their individual artistic cultivation and creative depth.
The late renowned Malaysian artist Tew Nai Tong, for instance, employed oil paint to depict his subjects through his signature approach of simplicity and serenity. His works, influenced by a distinctive Picasso-inspired form that combines naïveté with subtle distortion, are enriched through vibrant and expressive colour arrangements.
Heng Eow Lin not only transforms his subjects into poetic visual expressions but also employs the profound techniques of oil painting to convey the emotions and sentiments embedded within each theme. Through his masterful use of colour harmony and compositional balance, his works radiate a powerful sense of movement and emotional resonance.
Renowned Malaysian printmaker Loo Foh Sang presents the lifestyles and feminine grace of the indigenous Dayak people of Sarawak through plaster-based printmaking techniques, capturing both cultural identity and human warmth.
The only female artist participating in this exhibition, Tan Pek Cheng, uses oil painting to express her themes through a sense of innocence, tenderness and feminine sensitivity, creating artistic landscapes filled with simplicity and purity.
After a long absence from the public eye, Loke Gee Chian returns with works created in both oil and watercolour, infusing his subjects with emotional depth and a romantic sense of imagery.
Renowned Malaysian ink artist Lai Tiew Seong presents his themes through the simplicity and maturity of ink lines, subtle washes of colour and thoughtful spatial compositions, bringing his subjects vividly to life on rice paper.
Therefore, “Back to Basic” is an exhibition that embodies the artists’ continuous pursuit of self-challenge, artistic renewal and refinement of both creative vision and technique. By moving beyond conventional perceptions and misconceptions, the artists seek to approach the highest ideals of pure art. This pursuit represents the true essence of the exhibition.
