In “Melton’s World”, 66-year-old veteran Bidayuh artist Melton Kais invites viewers into a vivid inner landscape shaped by rainforest memory, ancestral culture, and contemporary abstraction. Rooted in the spirit of Borneo, his paintings move beyond representation, becoming rhythmic meditations on nature, faith, and the enduring pulse of life itself.

His canvases are alive with intersecting lines, spirals, and vibrating strokes that create a sense of movement almost musical in energy. Warm yellows, radiant ochres, deep greens, and luminous blues shift across the surface like sunlight filtering through dense rainforest canopies. Unlike the detached formalism often associated with abstraction, Melton’s works remain deeply human—filled with warmth, memory, and spiritual resonance.

At the core of his practice lies a distinctly Bidayuh visual language. Motifs inspired by tribal tattoos, weaving patterns, water currents, and ancestral symbols are transformed into contemporary painterly structures carrying the emotional memory of a people shaped by the forest. For Melton, abstraction is not merely aesthetic experimentation, but a way for cultural memory to continue breathing and evolving.

Born in Bengoh, Sarawak, Melton grew up surrounded by rivers and forests during a time when nature remained largely untouched. These early experiences continue to shape the spiritual atmosphere of his work. Initially trained as an art teacher, he later served as a panellist, coordinator, and examiner for Visual Art Education in the Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM), while also acting as chief judge for numerous art exhibitions organised by the Ministry of Tourism, Sarawak. This background lends his paintings a rare balance between instinctive freedom and structural discipline.

Yet what ultimately distinguishes Melton’s work is its sincerity. In a contemporary world often marked by irony and fragmentation, he continues to paint with optimism, wonder, and a profound belief in the sacred power of nature.

His works are held in the permanent collections of the National Art Gallery, Petronas Art Gallery, and Bank Negara Malaysia. He was also a close friend of the late Borneo-Bidayuh artist Raphael Scott Ahbeng, with whom he held a duo exhibition at Younie Gallery in 2012.

这些视觉语言，深深扎根于他的比达友文化背景。

部落纹样、编织结构、水流轨迹，以及祖先留下的古老符号，被他拆解、重组，并转化为一种当代抽象绘画的结构。抽象，于他而言，从来不是远离现实的形式实验，而是一种让文化记忆继续呼吸的方法。

Melton Kais 来自砂拉越石隆门（Bau），自幼成长于森林与河流之间。那是一个树木仍茂密、河流仍会歌唱的年代。早年的自然经验，后来逐渐沉淀为他创作中持续出现的精神风景——一个纯净、明亮，却又带着神秘性的内在世界。

早年接受美术教师培训的他，曾担任马来西亚教育文凭（SPM）视觉艺术科评审委员、协调员及考官，并多次受邀出任砂拉越旅游部艺术展览总评审。长年的教育与策展经验，使他的作品即使充满直觉性与自由感，底下依旧藏着严谨的结构意识与视觉秩序。

而最难得的，或许是他作品中的真诚。

在一个愈发冷漠的时代里，Melton依然相信自然有神、万物有灵；依然愿意描绘那些未经污染的世界，以及人与土地之间最原始的情感联系。

其作品已被马来西亚国家美术馆、国油美术馆及马来西亚国家银行典藏。他亦与已故比达友艺术家 Raphael Scott Ahbeng 私交深厚，并曾于2012年在颜丽轩画廊举办双人展。

这并不仅仅是一场展览。它更像一次重新走入森林的过程——在那里，颜色会呼吸，线条会歌唱，而人也终于能够暂时放下现代世界的噪音，再次听见自己内心深处，与自然共鸣的声音。
