FLAME OF THE FOREST 春之焰 (2004) | UNGKU FARRAH RAHMAN
Ungku Farrah binti Ungku Abdul Rahman, a noble member of the Johor royal kin, is a self-taught artist from Johor Bahru whose work reflects a deeply personal engagement with colour and emotion. She rediscovered her passion for drawing in her forties, transforming her lifelong hobby since childhood into a form of expressive storytelling.
Her artistic career began in 2004 with her first solo exhibition, the same year her work was featured on the cover of Expat magazine’s September issue. In July 2005, she was invited to present her solo exhibition - ‘i Exist’ at Maybank Art Gallery, officiated by Toh Puan Mahani Idris, founder and chairperson of Yayasan Seni Berdaftar (YSB). The exhibition explored the human condition through themes of love, life, hope, ideals, and fear. In August 2007, she presented ‘Seers’ at Andalucia Pantai Hillpark, Kuala Lumpur, followed by ‘Art’ at Balai Berita, New Straits Times Press (M) Berhad in December 2007. Her 2009 exhibition, ‘Colours of Love for Gaza’, held at Islamic Relief Malaysia, Selangor, saw 70% of proceeds from 200 artworks donated to the Palestinian Humanity Fund.
Her works—often rendered in greens, blues, and golds—embody a belief that love expressed through art can transcend division. One of her paintings decorates Mahkota Parade, Melaka, and she has published a book combining her paintings and poetry, supported by the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development and the National Art Gallery Malaysia.
