芍药又叫做离草、花中宰相、没骨花等。芍药花大艳丽，品种丰富，有白、粉、红、紫、黄、绿、黑和复色等，是扬州市市花。古人评花：牡丹第一，芍药第二，谓牡丹为花王，芍药为花相。古人形容美女还有“立如芍药，坐如牡丹”的句子，可见芍药花自古以来在人们心中就有着非常重要的位置。因为它开花较迟，故又称为“殿春”。
寓意着结情之约、惜别之情的含义，芍药还代表着真诚不变，送给朋友可增加两人的友谊。
